Cairns City in Australia
Cairns City was founded in 1876, and the city was named after William Wellington Cairns, then the current governor of the state of Queensland.
Cairns was formed to serve miners heading for the Hodgkinson River gold mines, but experienced a decline when he discovered the easiest way from Port Douglas.
Later developed to the railhead and major port for the export of sugar, gold and other metals cane, metals and agricultural products from the surrounding areas and the coastal area of the plateau Atherton. As of June 2012, and the population is about 153 075.
Cairns lies about 1,700 km (1,056 miles) from Brisbane, and about 2,700 km (1,678 miles) from Sydney by road.
Cairns is a popular travel destination for foreign tourists because of the tropical climate, plus they serve as a starting point for people wishing to visit the Great Barrier Reef and the far north of Queensland.
